Despite the opposition of the Ministerial Committee to the legislation and contrary to the coalition's position, the Knesset plenum approved today (Wednesday) in a preliminary reading the National Insurance Bill by MK Ilan Gilon.
The bill proposes to determine that the rate of the full allowance for an individual regarding disability benefits will be an amount equal to the minimum wage per month.
MK Galon said: "The meager allowance currently provided condemns a person with a disability to a life of poverty. It is supposed to be enough for a minimum subsistence, but it is clear to everyone that it is not at all sufficient for the needs of a person with a disability, who is required to purchase medication, finance travel by public transportation or taxis from place to place, support his household, and sometimes also employ a nursing worker, in addition to the aspiration to also take an active part in life's activities, including culture and leisure."
Afterwards, Galon stood above the podium in silence for long minutes.
When voting time came, 42 MKs supported the proposal, while 39 opposed it.
After the vote, many MKs came forward to congratulate Galon, who burst into tears from excitement.
The proposal will be forwarded to a Knesset committee that will decide where the discussion will continue.
