A 17-year-old Jewish youth was attacked by an Arab as he made his way to the Western Wall on the evening of Shavuot. He was taken to hospital in serious condition and admitted to the intensive care unit. In a surprising, not to say puzzling, decision, the police chose to investigate the victim who was attacked in the midst of Shavuot - and to accuse him of attacking the Arab.
On the eve of Shavuot, the young man named Yosef, accompanied by other young Jews, was walking to the Western Wall. Near the Garbage Gate - on the descent from Mount Zion, one of the young men stopped to step aside, and the group that continued walking suddenly noticed that their friend was being attacked by an Arab man of about 35 years old. The group quickly turned back, but then several more Arabs arrived, some armed with clubs, and one of them hit one of the young Jews with a club, hitting him in the head.
The investigation into the incident reveals that the Arab began yelling at the young man who was being used for his genitals, because it was his territory. The yelling escalated into physical violence and the Arab began to choke the young man. As mentioned, his friends who rushed to help him were attacked by other Arabs, to the point of a severe beating.
Yosef, who was injured, was rushed to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, suffering from a fractured skull and internal bleeding as a result of the blow from the club. He was hospitalized in the intensive care unit, where he remained for several days.
On Friday, he was released from intensive care and transferred to a regular ward for continued monitoring.
Investigation postpones Yom Tov
The police arrested the Arab attacker and his detention was extended until today. However, he claimed during the investigation that the boys had entered his private property.
Surprisingly, despite the serious injury, the David Area Police decided not to wait and rushed to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, where the injured man was hospitalized. First, a police investigator took testimony from the young man, who described the attack and claimed that he had not entered private property. However, several hours later, in the midst of Shavuot, police investigators arrived at the intensive care unit again, this time to question the injured man with a warning, on suspicion that he had attacked the Arab with pepper spray, as the attacker claimed.
On the evening of the holiday, the young man who was first attacked by the Arab reported to the police station and filed a complaint about the attack. He gave the police a video documenting the incident. The "Honenu" organization, which provides legal assistance to the injured man and the boys who were attacked, takes a serious view of the fact that the police automatically choose to blame the Jews for the attack, even though the testimonies clearly show an attack on nationalistic grounds against Jews who, after all, wanted to come to pray at the Western Wall.
