During a tour conducted today by the Knesset Science and Technology Committee at the Israel Postal Authority's national sorting center, Israel Postal Authority Director General Danny Goldstein revealed that out of about 80 cities in the country, the city of Bnei Brak is the fifth city in terms of the number of packages that the Israel Postal Authority distributes - packages that arrive in Israel as a result of online e-commerce on the Internet.
Before Bnei Brak, the cities of Tel Aviv, Rishon LeZion, Petah Tikva and Jerusalem appear.
Maklev came to tour the postal sorting center in Tel Aviv, in order to get a closer look at the innovations and technological improvements in the mail, technologies that will improve postal services.
Committee Chairman MK Maklev said that the postal service is much better than its image among the public. "A new wind is blowing from the post office," he said.
Post Office Director General Danny Goldstein said that he intends to open 270 new centers for distributing packages and registered mail in the coming year in retail chains and shopping centers - all of this in addition to the 750 branches scattered throughout the country, some of which began operating by evening.
In addition, he promised: "We will soon install lockers (safes) that will be accessible 24 hours a day and will be opened using a password that will be sent to consumers.".
Goldstein added that last year - 2015, the postal company went from a profit to a loss.
According to him, "The post office delivers an average of 2 million letters per day (500 million per year) + 400,000 packages. An annual increase of approximately 111,000. The volume of package delivery jumped from 19 million packages in 2012 to 40 million in 2015. This trend is expected to continue to increase every year.".
In honor of Maklev, a special 'Maklev Stamp' was launched:
