BlackBerry, which was once one of the largest smartphone manufacturers, is suffering a fatal blow: Facebook has announced that it will stop supporting BlackBerry devices that run the company's operating system, reports the geektime website.
Facebook's announcement joins the announcement by WhatsApp, the world's most popular instant messaging app, about ending support for BlackBerry.
Lou Igatsula, marketing director and head of apps at BlackBerry, wrote in response: "We are very disappointed with their decision as we know so many BlackBerry users love these apps. We fought hard to try to convince WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds, but for now, the decision still stands.".
Igzula added: "Nevertheless, we are working hard to ensure that our users have the best experience in light of this decision and we continue to look for alternatives.".
Geektime explains that Facebook's announcement is a nail in the coffin for BlackBerry - a company whose customers include US President Barack Obama.
WhatsApp and Facebook are the two most popular apps in the world with close to a billion users each, and if a giant like Facebook doesn't think BlackBerry's operating system is worth the effort and resources required for development, what will smaller developers say?
