A disgrace in the Holy City: Under the title 'A unique beach experience at the Station Complex in the summer of 2014,' the 'Station Complex' in Jerusalem advertises the capital city's, to put it mildly, immodest attraction.
This is a private complex, although all cultural activities, including this one, are budgeted for by the municipality. According to the information, the station beach will be built in the northern part of the station complex on an area of approximately 2,000 square meters, and will be surrounded by a seascape, with sea sand scattered throughout, a lifeguard shed, colored umbrellas, sand showers, and other attractions. Admission to the station beach will be free.
The station beach, which will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m., will be divided into several areas:
The children's area will include craft booths, a photography corner, activities for children: kites, craft workshops with colored sand, water toys, shallow pools, and more.
The youth beach will include a beach volleyball court, Frisbee and bats, sunbed rentals, backgammon, hookahs, umbrellas with sprayers for refreshment, beach showers, seating areas. In addition, the beach will host parties, concerts, drum circles and a variety of other events.
Nati Lasri, chairwoman of the Shas faction in Jerusalem: "We express disgust and view with severity the attempt to breach any fence in the sanctity of Jerusalem. We will act impartially with all the tools at our disposal to stop the disgrace, according to the instructions of our sages. The status quo in Jerusalem requires the city's leaders to be sensitive and prudent.".
The Jerusalem Municipality did not respond, but a senior Haredi official in the municipality told Haredim 10 that this is not the first time a beach-like complex has been operated in Jerusalem. In the past, there were complaints about its location near the walls of the Old City, but the station complex is not in the walls area and is not in a Haredi area at all. This is a normal activity suitable for the secular public.".
According to him, "This is not a desecration of the Sabbath, as there is no activity at the site beyond what is happening there today, and the site also includes an area with only sand and free of charge.".
