After Facebook: WhatsApp, the world's most popular messaging app, announced early Tuesday morning that it had crossed the one billion user mark.
WhatsApp gained the last 100 million users in 3 months.
Jan Koum, founder and CEO of WhatsApp, shared some additional data on Facebook:
There are a billion groups on WhatsApp - one group for every user on average. Since most people have more than one group, this means that there are some people in the world who are not members of any group.
Every day, 42 billion messages are sent on the service - only about 41% of which contain images or video. The rest are plain text.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg congratulated the WhatsApp team on the achievement.
""The WhatsApp community has more than doubled since joining Facebook. We've added the ability for you to communicate with your distant loved ones. We've waived the registration fee and made WhatsApp completely free.".
""Now we're working on connecting more people around the world and making it easier to connect with businesses.".
