One person was killed and four others were injured last night (Saturday) in an explosion that occurred in a residential building in the Beit Hanina neighborhood in East Jerusalem, apparently as a result of a gas leak.

The explosion occurred at around 3:00 a.m., when the five - family members who had returned home from an event - opened the door to the house. According to the assessment of fire investigators from the Jerusalem Fire Department, an electrical spark was created at that moment, leading to the explosion - and a fire broke out in the building.

One of the residents of the house was killed, another man, about 48 years old, was taken to the hospital in moderate condition, suffering from injuries to his lower limbs, and the rest were lightly injured.

David Crispel, the incident scene manager for United Hatzalah, said: "When I arrived at the scene, along with other paramedics from the United Hatzalah emergency unit, we found a ground-floor apartment in flames. The neighbors rescued a deceased person from the apartment and another person with moderate burns, to whom we provided initial medical treatment.

""I and other paramedics conducted scans on the additional floors of the building and helped children and adults exit the building due to the heavy smoke. Citizens reported to us that explosions were heard from the apartment that was on fire.

The circumstances of the incident are being investigated by the police and fire investigators from the Jerusalem Fire Department. Additional victims of minor injuries were treated at the scene and did not require evacuation to a hospital.".
