Mira and Emmanuel Riva from Tel Aviv were murdered at the Jewish Museum in Brussels

Two of the four people murdered in yesterday's deadly attack at the Jewish Museum in Brussels are Mira and Emmanuel Riva, residents of Tel Aviv, aged 54 and 53.

The Foreign Ministry explained that the two were not carrying identification documents, so it took many hours for their identities to be established. The Israeli embassy is in contact with the local police and will arrange for the bodies to be flown back as soon as the investigating judge in charge of the investigation allows it.

A few hours later, Belgian authorities claimed that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident. The suspect was taken in for questioning, but was released, and local police are still searching for the shooter who fled.

The murderous attack has heightened the fears of Jews living in the country, who see the event as a symbol of the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe. Sources in the Jewish community say that anti-Semitism has increased, and that this can also be seen in the media.

Belgian government officials held a special press conference in the capital, Brussels. "The government is shocked by this dramatic event, and we condemn this violent act. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families," said the Belgian Prime Minister.

Interior Minister Joel Milke, who earlier visited the scene of the shooting and claimed that "all evidence points to this being an anti-Semitic attack," also spoke during the special press conference. "Innocent victims lost their lives," she said. "I arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, and we took basic steps to restore security and to ensure that there is no further attack.".

בעקבות הרצח אמר ראש הממשלה נתניהו: "מעשה הרצח הזה הוא תוצאה של הסתה בלתי פוסקת נגד היהודים ומדינתם. על אדמת אירופה ממשיכות להישמע עלילות וכזבים נגד מדינת ישראל, תוך התעלמות שיטתית מהפשעים נגד האנושות ומעשי הרצח שנעשים באזורנו. התשובה שלנו לצביעות הזאת היא אמירה בלתי פוסקת של האמת, המשך מאבק עיקש בטרור וביצור כוחנו". גם שר החוץ, אביגדור ליברמן, התייחס לארוע ואמר: "התוצאה בשטח של ההסתה האנטי-ישראלית והאנטישמית שמתבטאת, בין היתר, בקריאות לחרם על ישראל ובחרמות על מוצרים ישראליים, בפעילויות נגד ישראל בפורומים בינלאומיים ובעמדה חד-צדדית אוטומטית נגד ישראל".. לדבריו, "במהלך ההיסטוריה עברה האנטישמיות גלגולים רבים, אך הבסיס נשאר תמיד אותו בסיס: שנאת יהודים, רק בגלל שהם יהודים, באשר הם, ואין זה משנה אם הם חיים בירושלים, בתל-אביב, באריאל, בחברון, בבריסל או במאדים".
