Eyewitnesses told the Lakewood Scoops website that a Lakewood Rescue team that arrived at the scene of the accident found the girl on the ground, after the driver of the van and a resident living on the street rescued the girl from under the vehicle, in critical condition.
She was taken to a hospital, where paramedics performed advanced CPR on her. At the hospital, doctors fought for her life, but unfortunately their efforts failed - and they were forced to declare her dead.
The Lakewood Traffic and Safety Division is investigating the incident.
Initial investigation indicates that the girl was hit while she was on the sidewalk in front of 307 11th Street. The driver of the offending vehicle had exited the parking lot of the house, where he had picked up a child. According to police, it is still unclear where the girl was hit, whether while she was on the sidewalk, or if she was in the path leading to the parking lot and was dragged to the sidewalk.
This is the second tragedy in the Haredi community in the US within a day: Yesterday, Levi Nieman, a two-year-old toddler, was killed in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, after falling from a sixth-floor window in the residential building where his family lives onto a third-floor balcony. Crown Heights Rescue personnel who were called to the scene initially had difficulty locating where the boy had fallen. Once they found him, they had to climb down through a balcony to pull him out.
He was taken to the hospital by ambulance in critical condition, while paramedics performed CPR on him. The doctors at the hospital fought for his life, but unfortunately they were forced to declare him dead.
