Unsupervised tripe meat caught again: Inspectors from the Central Enforcement and Investigations Unit (CIU) of the Ministry of Agriculture, in cooperation with the police, have once again operated in recent days to seize "black" meat, without supervision or control.
In last night's operation in Jerusalem, approximately 140 kilograms of mutton and ground beef, smuggled from the Palestinian Authority, were seized inside a vehicle that was stopped for a routine inspection. The meat was seized inside 8 cartons that were hidden in the vehicle using a double floor. The inspection revealed that the vehicle did not have a valid license and was intended for smuggling.
The meat was destroyed by order of a veterinarian, the vehicle was moved to a storage yard, and legal proceedings were initiated against the suspect.
In another activity carried out by the Food and Drug Administration and police inspectors, several butcher shops in the village of Tur'an in the north were also inspected. During the activity last night, approximately 700 kilograms of beef and lamb were seized, and a pirated chicken coop was discovered containing approximately 200 poultry that do not meet the requirements of the veterinary services at the Ministry of Agriculture, and are not under the supervision of the ministry.
One of the butcher shops was empty of meat. Initial questioning revealed to the inspectors that the owner of the butcher shop, a resident of Tur'an in his 60s, owns two active restaurants in the north outside the village. A team of inspectors was sent to the restaurants to inspect the meat, in light of suspicion that the restaurants were holding and selling meat that had been slaughtered in a black slaughterhouse. After the inspection, the suspicion turned out to be valid, and the inspectors seized approximately 550 kilograms of beef and lamb in the two restaurants. The source of the meat is unknown and there is a suspicion that it is black slaughter meat and is not fit for human consumption.
The meat was confiscated and destroyed. The restaurant owner admitted to the suspicions and it is recommended that charges be filed against him.
At the second butcher shop in the village, approximately 180 kg of beef slaughtered in black slaughter and approximately 200 poultry were seized in a pirate coop that the butcher shop owner illegally kept. The poultry are intended for black slaughter, which is carried out on site under extremely difficult sanitary conditions and is sold at the butcher shop.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development stated that due to public health concerns, there is a ban on operating meat factories without a permit and supervision. The ministry asks the public to make sure to purchase meat from reputable places that are under supervision. In addition, it is important to ensure that the product is in its original, closed and clean packaging with the label and marking of the production date and expiration date.
