Israel Police: Not what you thought

The Israel Police has a particularly bad image - one that led Minister Erdan to 'parachute' an external candidate for the position of Commissioner • Prof. Oz Almog reminds us that the picture is not necessarily one-dimensional, and we should not fall into the stereotypical trap

משטרת ישראל זה לא מה שחשבתם. זה גם לא מה שהתקשורת מאכילה אתכם. לפני כחצי שנה קיבלנו - שותפתי (ד"ר תמר אלמוג) ואני - פנייה מפתיעה מהדרג הבכיר במשטרה. הוזמנו לערוך מחקר עומק על הדור הצעיר בארגון, מתוך שאיפה להביא לשיפור באקלים התעסוקה שלהם. המחקר נעשה בשיתוף פעולה עם מחלקת מדעי ההתנהגות המשטרתית והדו"ח המסכם יוגש בשבועות הקרובים. במסגרת המחקר ראיינו עשרות קצינים ונגדים מתחומים וגילאים מגוונים, כולל קבוצה רחבה של קצינים בכירים. גילינו אנשים ברמה גבוהה מאוד: מוסריים, חדורי שליחות, פתוחים, אינטליגנטים ומשכילים. אגב, המכללה הלאומית לשוטרים בבית שמש, שנפתחה לאחרונה, היא אחד המוסדות המרשימים והמתקדמים בארץ ובעצם גם בעולם.
So it is true that the large number of senior officers who have resigned indicates a crisis situation and the need for a serious and comprehensive internal audit. But we must not - morally and practically - fall into the trap of stereotypical generalization. It is important to know and remember that tens of thousands of wonderful police officers and volunteers serve in the police force, who make a great physical and mental sacrifice every day for the sake of all of us. We need to honor and respect them.
