The Jerusalem-based Berman Bakery Group celebrated 140 years of successful activity at a ceremony held yesterday (Tuesday) at the Hotzout Hayotzer complex.

At the ceremony, a video was screened telling the history of Berman bakeries, which is intertwined with the history of the city of Jerusalem.

Mayor Nir Barkat, together with Yitzhak Berman, fourth generation in the bakery and chairman of the group, inaugurated the millstone sculpture in the complex, the only remnant of the first flour mill used by Berman Bakery outside the walls, until the eve of the War of Independence.

This is a celebratory year for Berman Bakeries: Yitzhak Berman, 71, owner of the Jerusalem Berman Bakeries Group, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Food Association about two months ago for his work at Berman during his 50-year tenure, and on the occasion of the company's 140th anniversary celebrations.

Yitzhak knows the bread industry inside out and lives it, as he was born into the family business, the fourth generation. The fifth generation, his daughter and son-in-law, are also continuing the company's path and are tasked with the difficult task of overcoming the crises that have befallen the bread industry in recent years.

The story of the Berman bakeries, Yitzhak and the entire family, is a fascinating story, which encapsulates the story of the country even before its founding in 1875:

Yitzhak Berman is the fourth generation of the Berman family. He began working in the bakery immediately upon his discharge from the IDF, from the Paratrooper Brigade, when he was less than 21 years old. He performed almost every possible role in the bakery. In fact, every task that his two older uncles, who ran the family business, needed.

They were the ones who hired him after the death of his father, who was their older brother. After a few years, he was appointed Vice President of the company, and after a few more years, they appointed him CEO of the company.

Berman Bakery was founded in Jerusalem by Yehoshua Berman's maternal grandfather, the doll Krisha, in 1875, in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.

All of her descendants and descendants of her were born and raised in the family business, which went through many upheavals, starting with the Ottoman Empire, followed by the British Mandate, and after the War of Independence, the rule of the State of Israel, as well as all the events and wars that came along the way (World Wars I and II, the War of Independence and the Siege of Jerusalem, the Holy Land War, the Six-Day War, the Yom Kippur War, the Lebanon Wars and the Gulf Wars, as well as the intifadas and acts of terrorism).
