The following story illustrates best of all the meaning of the phrase "Cast your bread upon the waters, for in many days you will find it" [Ecclesiastes 11].

Liz Woodward is a waitress at a New Jersey cafe. In the evening, two firefighters arrived at the cafe after a 12-hour battle with a severe fire.

Liz overheard the two men talking, realized they had returned from a grueling firefighting job, and decided to surprise them. Instead of the usual bill, they received a letter that read:

""Your breakfast is on me today - thank you for all you do; no matter what your role, you are brave and strong.".

""You are driven by fire, and driven by all your courage, and you go into places that everyone else runs away from. You are a wonderful example. Go get some rest, Liz.".

The two firefighters, Tim Young and Paul Hollings, were particularly moved, and Tim wrote on his Facebook page: "An act of kindness without any selfishness. I ask my friends to come into the cafe and support it, and if you see Liz there, please give her a big tip.".

But the story didn't end there: the two firefighters discovered that the waitress's father, Steve, was paralyzed from the neck down, and Liz set up an online fundraising page, where she tried to get donations for a special car that would fit the father's wheelchair.

Tys published another post in which he asked people to help Liz: "It turns out that the waitress who invited us to dinner needs the help herself...", he wrote.

Tys' words worked, and within a few days Liz received donations totaling $70,000, instead of the $17,000 she initially needed.

A grateful Liz said: "I'm so surprised. All I did was pay for their breakfast, and they left with a smile. It proves that sometimes even a small act of kindness can change other people's lives.".
