A group of industrialists, small business owners, merchants, social activists, and merchant organizations from across the country, united under an association called the 'Coalition for Shabbat Equality', convened a press conference today (Monday) at Sokolov House in Tel Aviv calling for businesses to be closed on Shabbat, for the sake of a day of rest. Members of the coalition include Avi Katz - one of the owners of 'Cofix', Yehuda Laniado - CEO of the 'Osher Ad' marketing chain, and Zvika Oren - former president of the Manufacturers' Association, Attorney Yuval Elbashan - Dean of Social Development at the Ono Academic College, Dr. Meir Bozaglo - Chairman of the Tikun Movement; Yair Korach - Chairman of the Merchants' Association. Also present were small business owners from Rishon LeZion, Ashdod, Bashkiria, and Tel Aviv who are members of the struggle. Coalition members have united for joint legal and public activity to allow a day of rest on Shabbat. Among the measures the coalition is promoting: legislative changes to clearly separate cultural and recreational activities - which will remain open on Shabbat - from commercial activities. The owner of 'Cofix' and 'Super Cofix', Avi Katz, said: "I cry out my pain as a disadvantaged person. The CEO of a marketing chain that is open on Shabbat has never worked a single Shabbat in his life, I assure you of that.". ""This coalition is an organization of people for whom the issue of rest on Shabbat is painful, harmful to them, and therefore we are acting on the matter. We organized into a coalition to say 'enough with deprivation.' We are fighting against deprivation on several levels: Social - there are elements who, while hiding behind the value of pluralism, employ foreign workers who are forced to work 7 days a week. ""Those workers who try to refuse to work on the seventh day will find themselves without a job. Likewise, in the commercial sphere, the discrimination screams to the heavens - there are places where trading on Shabbat is permitted and there are places where it is prohibited. Someone decided who will be fined and who will not - this is clear discrimination. It is impossible to win such discrimination, what kind of situation is it that one is allowed to open on Shabbat and the other is not.". Attorney Yuval Elbashan, Dean of Social Development at the Ono Academic Center: "There is no logic in calling for a 'free Sabbath' when freedom is denied to those who are forced to work on it. Anywhere in the world where there is not a single day of rest, there is no rest at all. If there are no inspectors who allow the day of rest to be enforced, then it is the disadvantaged worker who is harmed and forced to work 7 days a week. This is a liberal social struggle, this is a struggle for human rights.".
