Two years ago, two luxury vehicles collided at the Bar Ilan Interchange on Highway 4. The late Hanan Gold and his son Guy, who were traveling in a Porsche collector's car, were hit by a BMW.
After a few seconds, the vehicles began to catch fire.
Klein, a volunteer paramedic with the United Hatzalah from the Bnei Brak branch, was shopping near the scene of the accident and saw smoke billowing from the cars. He rushed to the scene and rescued the father, Hanan, from the vehicle, but the son, Guy, remained trapped in the burning vehicle.
Without hesitation, Klein entered the burning Porsche and, using his paramedic scissors, cut the strap and rescued the 15-year-old boy.
""I'll go back to that day," Klein told Rita, in an international video call from Bnei Brak to Boston. "I saw a plume of smoke and I got there quickly. The sight was terrible. Hanan and Guy were screaming in pain and suffering from burns. I got Hanan out first. He kept walking around shouting: 'My son is in the car, get him out.' I told him to stay away.".
Klein went on to describe how he approached the burning car, took the scissors out of his pocket, cut the seat belt and shouted to a soldier who was approaching to come to his aid. "We took Guy out of the burning car and laid him on the floor. We saw that he was covered in severe burns. I pulled him away from the car, and after exactly 30 seconds there was a big explosion that burned everything. The car went up in flames.".
Klein added: "The speed and availability of the Openolens (motorcycle ambulance) and the equipment I had in it helped me save Guy.".
Days after the accident, the late Hanan died in the hospital. Guy was hospitalized in serious condition in the burns department. Medic Klein tried to monitor Guy's recovery, but when he visited the hospital, the boy was still sedated and on a ventilator.
After about three weeks, Arhala discovered that Guy had moved from Tel Hashomer for treatment abroad. He thought they would never meet again.
Guy, accompanied by his mother Rita, traveled to Boston for skin graft treatments. While looking for a place to stay, they met the Roberts family.
Professor Ed Roberts, a researcher at MIT, his wife Nancy, and their family decided to host Guy and Rita at their home in Boston while Guy was undergoing treatments there. They became like family. Since then, Guy has undergone 50 difficult and complicated surgeries.
8 months ago, a fundraising event for United Hatzalah was held at the Roberts family home.
At the event, Rita and United Hatzalah President Eli Bir met. Rita told Bir about the accident that led to her husband's death and the treatments Guy underwent. Bir knew about the incident and told Rita additional details that she had not known until then. Mainly about Hanan's sacrifice, who asked the paramedic Ar'aleh not to treat him and try to save Guy.
Professor Roberts, who witnessed the conversation, was very moved, and decided to donate 120,000 shekels to the United Hatzalah Openness. He requested that the motorcycle bear the name of the late Hanan and that the person who would ride it on his mission to save lives be an American.
And so it was.
Last Thursday, the open-air facility donated by the Roberts family - friends of the Gold family - was inaugurated in an impressive ceremony held at the Bnei Brak branch of Ihud Hatzalah.
Rita's daughters attended the ceremony, and Rita watched it via live video broadcast from Boston.
United Hatzalah President Eli Bir said at the moving ceremony: "Today, after a circle has been closed, the Gold family has become part of the 'United Hatzalah' family. And every time an emergency fund donated to honor Hanan's soul brings the volunteer medic to the United States to save lives, the Gold family and the late Hanan will have a part in that.".
