Tragedy at a Chabad house in Nepal: A 28-year-old Israeli man from Lod collapsed during Shabbat at a Chabad house in Kathmandu. According to the Reuters report, this happened after reciting the Shema-Israel prayer during the morning Shabbat prayer.
Immediately after the collapse, the emissary and director of the Chabad House in Kathmandu, Rabbi Hezki Lipshitz, along with other guests, began CPR operations. Local rescue forces arrived at the Chabad House and evacuated the collapsed man to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of his collapse, as of now, is still unknown.
To prevent inappropriate treatment of the deceased's body, Rabbi Lifshitz organized a close guard for the body until the end of Shabbat. The deceased's family was informed of the tragedy and the Chabad Center is now handling the expediting of procedures to transfer the body to Israel as soon as possible.
This incident is the second case Rabbi Lipshitz treated this past Shabbat. Shortly before, he returned from rescuing another Israeli who had been injured in the head. The incident began on Friday when an Israeli called the Chabad House and reported a head injury, but he could not pinpoint its exact location.
Rabbi Lipshitz contacted travel agents, promising a large sum of money to anyone who could locate and rescue the injured man. Due to the weather, a helicopter could not be launched, but on Saturday morning the Israeli was located in good condition and taken to the hospital.
This evening, Rabbi Lipshitz said: "We spent a difficult weekend at the Chabad house with a lot of physical activity in order to take care of the two Israelis. Unfortunately, we saved the life of one in time, and we were unable to save the life of the other. May we hear good news.".
