A moving scene in a hospital: Moishe Berman, a 'United Hatzalah' volunteer who this week saved the life of a 5-year-old boy from Haifa after he choked on a balloon he swallowed, was unable to hold back tears of excitement when he came to visit him in the room where he was hospitalized.
The incident took place on Saturday night on Michael Street in Haifa, near the volunteer's home.
"I live on Michael Street in Haifa," Berman said. "Around 7:40 PM, a neighbor called me saying that the neighbors were shouting 'rescue' and that I should come quickly. I grabbed the ambulance and reported that I was on my way to the cries for help on Michael Street...
""After half a minute I was there. I received a child about 5 years old, unconscious, not breathing. According to the father, the child swallowed a foreign object.
""At first I tried to perform operations to remove the foreign body, and after that failed, I began CPR. At the same time, I asked the resident to report the situation to Mears and call volunteers and an intensive care unit.".
""While I was giving the child massages, I asked God for one thing: to return this child alive and healthy to his parents.".
""Additional volunteers from 'Ihud Hatzalah' arrived at the scene within a few minutes and we continued with full CPR. After several more minutes of CPR, a pulse and breathing returned and the child was taken to the hospital.".
""I have no words to describe the feeling I've been going through in the last two hours. I thank God Almighty for blessing me and my fellow volunteers at Ihud Hatzalah - that we were privileged to save the life of a Jewish child as pure and innocent as the fat man...""
The next day, Berman asked to come and visit the child - and when he entered the room, he had difficulty holding back tears of excitement.
