The "Local Testimony" press photo exhibition opened this week at the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv, and will be on display throughout the coming month.
Out of thousands of submitted works, the spectacular photographs of the ultra-Orthodox photographer Yaakov Nechomi were selected again this year.
The two photographs by Nahumi, a resident of Bnei Brak, which were selected to appear in this year's exhibition in the 'News' and 'Urbanism' categories, present a look at the state of ultra-Orthodox society.
"The first photograph was taken at the Million rally against the conscription of yeshiva students," says Nahumi. "There was a large crowd, but I tried to find a more interesting angle than a general photo of a crowd. I looked down and caught this amazing moment, when a group of young men danced and formed an unusual 'snake' shape.".
The second photo was taken in Bnei Brak, near the photographer's residence. "A house that was demolished by the municipality became a play area for the neighborhood's children," he says. "The situation created an interesting situation where the children play outside the house, inside the house.".
Both photographs also won the curator's choice.
This is the fifth year that Nahumi's photographs have been selected to appear in the exhibition, and in previous years they have won high places.
''Local Testimony', the regional photojournalism exhibition, is presented annually alongside the World Press Photo exhibition.
The exhibition was first held over a decade ago and attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year.
The annual exhibition showcases the best press and documentary photographs from Israel and the Palestinian Authority, as selected by an independent panel of judges from thousands of photographs submitted by active photographers for the preliminary competition.
The exhibition is carefully curated each year by a guest curator and reflects a series of annual events and selected images that commemorate moments of cultural, social, media and human significance. The exhibition presents a retrospective of the events of the past year, reflected through the various fields.
