The Jerusalem District Attorney's Office filed an indictment with the District Court today (Tuesday) for causing death by negligence against contractor Ayman Hamad, 49, due to a wall collapse in Mea Shearim that caused the death of yeshiva student Itzik Steinberger, 25, in January 2024.
According to the indictment, Hamad carried out renovation work on the building in violation of building regulations: he built casting molds on only one side of the wall, while the other side rested on the wall of the old building.
In addition, he poured all the concrete at once instead of gradually, and did not check the casting load and the strength of the structure beforehand.
As a result, the old wall could not withstand the load, collapsed on Steinberger while he was taking a nap in his room, and covered his body under rubble and concrete.
He was taken to the hospital, but sadly died from severe head injuries.
At the end of May, the prosecutor's office closed the case against the property owner on the grounds of lack of guilt.
The indictment filed today focuses solely on the contractor, attributing direct responsibility for the disaster to him.
