Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded this evening (Monday) to President Trump's announcement that he had halted the Israeli attack on Dahiyeh - after a conversation between the two.
Netanyahu said: "I spoke with President Trump this evening and told him that if Hezbollah does not stop attacking our cities and citizens, Israel will attack terrorist targets in Beirut. Our position remains the same. At the same time, the IDF will continue to operate as planned in southern Lebanon.".
According to political commentator Amit Segal, in the ceasefire announced by the president, Hezbollah pledged not to attack Israel with rockets, and Israel pledged not to attack Beirut. The fighting in southern Lebanon will continue.
Earlier, Trump stated on the social network Truth: "I had a very productive conversation with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu of Israel, and no troops will be sent to Beirut, and all troops already on their way there have been turned back. Also, through senior representatives, I had a very good conversation with Hezbollah, and they agreed that all firing will cease - that Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel.".
The Lebanese government later issued a statement explaining the details of the agreement between Trump and Netanyahu: "As part of the efforts that the Lebanese government is investing in maintaining stability and preventing further escalation in Lebanon, and following the phone call that took place between Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Lebanese authorities received confirmation that Hezbollah has agreed to the American proposal establishing a mutual cessation of attacks.".
""According to the proposed arrangement, Israel will stop attacks on Beirut's southern suburbs, and in return, Hezbollah will refrain from carrying out attacks against Israel. Later, the ceasefire agreement will be expanded so that it applies to the entire territory of Lebanon.".
The Lebanese government statement stated: "Later, President Donald Trump spoke by phone with the Lebanese Ambassador to the United States, Nada Mouad, and informed her that he had obtained the consent of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the proposed arrangement. Ambassador Mouad conveyed the results of the talks to President Aoun, who in turn updated Hezbollah with the details.".
