The Shas faction announced this evening (Monday) that "at the end of a long faction meeting," Shas wrote to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a firm demand to put the 'Basic Law: Torah Study', which is on the Knesset table as early as this coming Wednesday, to a vote.
Shas clarified in the letter that "the approval of the law that enshrines the value of Torah study and elevates the status of Torah learners is a condition for continued support for coalition legislation. The time has come for the coalition to make a clear and unequivocal statement about the central place of Torah in the State of Israel.".
The one who was quick to mock Deri was the chairman of United Torah Judaism, MK Yitzhak Goldknopf, who "congratulated" Aryeh Deri for what he called "disillusionment":
""We congratulate Aryeh Deri on the welcome disillusionment, which comes three years late. It is good that Shas has also finally reached the grim conclusion that Torah Judaism has been warning against for a long time: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must understand that commitments must be kept, and not waste time and make repeated excuses, while the Torah world is forced to pay the price.".
MK Michael Malchieli did not remain unmoved and hit out at Goldknopf: "The serious words of MK Goldknopf are a serious insult to the wise and rabbinical members of the Council of Torah Scholars, who guided and continue to guide Shas representatives at every step in the struggle to protect Torah scholars. The talk of so-called 'disillusionment' is a blatant and serious disrespect for Torah thought.".
Malchieli added: "Goldknopf, the hurting public is expecting at this time to unite the ranks and take joint action, and not childish bickering. It's time for you to stop listening to the little foxes around you and act together in this campaign.".
Goldknopf added: "We act in the light of our rabbis, the great Torah scholars and Hasidic scholars. The nickname 'little foxes' for the Council of Torah Scholars is a continuation of the policy of denigrating rabbis and undermining them.".
