With the advent of Jerusalem Day: The 'Mercaz HaRav' Yeshiva is holding the main event to mark 59 years since the liberation of the Old City and the holy sites.
Is 100,000 NIS right for you before Shavuot? Last hours for the big lottery!
The event was attended by a long line of public figures, including Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon and the Chief Rabbis of Israel. Rabbis, judges, ministers, and members of Knesset attended the gathering alongside them, with the combination of the Six-Day War and the renewed sense of national strength in 1945 expected to be the focus of speeches throughout the evening.
The Rishon LeZion, Rabbi David Yosef, delivered a strong speech against the Supreme Court: "Today we are almost sixty years after the occupation of Jerusalem and the Western Wall is still controversial because of the Supreme Court.".
He shouted to the crowd of celebrants: "Whether it is or not, the Western Wall is ours.".
The Chief Rabbi shared with those present that he had written a comprehensive halachic ruling reviewing the history and sanctity of the place, which was sent to the High Court judges through the Rabbinate's lawyers. According to him, "I don't know if they read it, but they had no response on this issue.".
The rabbi continued his remarks by sharply criticizing the judges' attitude towards the world of Halacha and the rabbinate. "You know their disdain, I say yes - they disdain everything related to Halacha, they disdain the rabbinate, they think they lead everything.".
The rabbi called on the judges to refrain from interfering in the management of the holy site. "I say, gentlemen, up to this point, come what may, the Western Wall is ours. The Western Wall does not belong to the Reformers, the Western Wall does not belong to the Supreme Court, and I call on the judges to remove your hands from the Western Wall, the Western Wall of all of Israel who are faithful to the Torah and the commandments.".
His words were met with applause from the audience.
