Firefighters, with the assistance of volunteers, worked this evening (Sunday) on a fire that broke out in a residential apartment on Maggid Street from Mezeritch in the Haredi city of Beitar Illit.
The teams that arrived at the scene detected smoke coming from one of the apartments, broke down the door of the house and rescued two children, ages 4 and 8, from the apartment under the cover of the smoke.
The crews carried out operations to extinguish the fire in the kitchen before the fire spread to the rest of the house, while simultaneously searching for additional trapped people.
After a few moments, the children's mother arrived at the scene and accompanied the fire officer who handed her the children, who had been rescued safely.
Rabbi Reshef Kobi Erez, the incident commander: "Upon receiving the report, numerous teams were dispatched to the incident. When the teams arrived, we detected smoke coming from the apartment and broke open the door.
""The firefighters identified two children in the smoke-filled house and rescued them back. After medical examinations, I looked after them until the mother of the family arrived.".
""This is a serious incident that could have ended in a major disaster without the neighbors' vigilance. We arrived at an apartment where a pot was left on the gas unattended and it caught fire, while there were small children locked in the house.
""I would like to remind the public: young children should never be left unattended, and certainly not near cooking appliances and open flames. Install smoke detectors, and save lives!""
