The Central District Court in Lod today sentenced an illegal resident, Ziad Gazawi, 31, to 17 years in prison. He assisted in the theft of a vehicle and, while fleeing, crashed into another vehicle at the Shafirim Interchange, causing the death of the passenger, the late 69-year-old Lyubov Melnik.
The court also ordered him to pay compensation to the deceased's family, totaling 270,000 shekels.
