The 64 members of the electoral body will elect a new chief rabbi for the city of Tel Aviv today (Sunday) - this after the eminent Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau finished his position eight years ago.
The election process will begin at 3:00 PM and end at 5:30 PM - and after the votes are counted, the elected rabbi will be announced.
The election process is taking place after numerous delays, partly due to petitions filed by council members regarding the composition of the electorate. Last month, the High Court ordered the elections to be postponed due to a petition filed by candidates serving in the reserves.
Among the prominent contenders for the position: Rabbi Zavadia Cohen, who serves as the head of the Tel Aviv rabbinate, and enjoys the support of Shas; Rabbi Chaim Amsalem, who enjoys the support of elements in the coalition and the opposition; and Rabbi Aryeh Levin, the rabbi of the northern part of the city, who enjoys great sympathy.
The election committee is headed by retired rabbi Rabbi Yaakov Zamir, a former member of the Grand Rabbinical Court. The electoral body consists of 64 members, including 43 members of the city council, public representatives and the head of the religious council, and 21 representatives appointed by the Minister of Religious Services.
