The Knesset plenum discussed this evening (Monday) the second and third readings of the bill proposed by Degel Hatorah Chairman MK Moshe Gafni to expand the authority of religious courts to also consider arbitration proceedings - with the consent of the parties.
Gafni: "I first submitted the bill immediately after the High Court ruling on the 8th of Nisan 5766 - symbolically exactly twenty years ago.".
""I heard that the opposition claims that the status quo ended today, and I ask where the status quo was when I introduced the leaven law that authorizes hospital administrators to prevent the introduction of leaven into medical centers, or in other cases.".
""It is precisely during the war that we need salvation from God, when two people come who are interested in discussing property law according to Torah law with the consent of both sides - what's wrong with that? The status quo is here, it was and will remain!""
He added: "I am happy that we are succeeding in passing this law after so many years and expanding the authority of the courts in Israel. We will act in the same way in other struggles, we will continue with determination and not let up!""
The bill will be brought to a vote in the Knesset plenary session after the opposition's filibuster and will be entered into the State of Israel's law book.
