After the severe tragedy that befell the family of Minister Orit Struk and the harsh reactions on social media: Noam Party Chairman, MK Avi Maoz, delivered a scathing speech in the Knesset today (Monday) - against those who took advantage of the tragedy to attack the minister from religious Zionism.
MK Maoz made it clear that even in the midst of a sharp political dispute, there must be a clear boundary. According to him, political criticism is legitimate and even natural in a democracy, but the statements made against Minister Ströck after the disaster crossed every red line.
""When public activists, protest leaders, and those interested in being elected to the Knesset cruelly dance on blood and collaborate with a despicable and vile blood libel, it is no longer legitimate," he said in his speech.
In his remarks, MK Maoz attacked the Kaplan Protest activist, Shikma Bresler, and claimed that she had published harsh allegations against the minister even before the funeral. "When an anarchist like Shikma Bresler echoes delusional claims made by a mentally ill person - this is baseness and wickedness.".
Maoz also came out strongly against protest activist Moshe Redman: "When an anarchist like Moshe Redman insults and blasphemes the minister while blood is still boiling and calls her names like 'scum' and 'death eater' - this is baseness, wickedness and pure evil.".
He also sharply criticized the opposition parties and asked why there were no condemnations of their words. "Where are the members of the Labor Party and the Democrats who rejoiced in this evil and will denounce it from within? Hatred of the right and the religious sanctifies all means for you?" he wondered.
In his speech in the plenary, he claimed that the phenomenon is not accidental but part of a broader culture of political persecution against the right-wing camp, which is also expressed in the conduct of the law enforcement system.
According to him, the same public atmosphere that allows for severe personal attacks against elected officials is also the one that allows for legal persecution.
As an example, he mentioned the prime minister's trial and the stitching of the files, as well as the pressures that Shlomo Filber previously described, which were exerted on him to sign a state witness agreement.
MK Maoz also mentioned Yonatan Urich's recent claims about his arrest and the affair surrounding the arrest of Bezalel Zini, who was detained for more than fifty days, according to him, solely due to his family ties to the head of the Shin Bet.
According to MK Maoz, all of this is part of the same broad phenomenon of using extreme means in political struggle.
""Dividing politically is fine, and trying to win elections is legitimate, of course," he said. "But using force, violence, bloodshed and persecution is absolutely not legitimate.".
