Cost of living? The public continues to spend billions: Data published today (Monday) by Sheba - Automated Banking Services - indicates that in January 2026, the growth trend in spending by the Israeli public on credit cards continued.

According to the data, spending in January 2026 jumped by 7.31% compared to last year and stood at 49.826 billion shekels - an increase of 3.4 billion shekels.

The average daily spending in January was NIS 1.607 billion. This figure represents an increase of 0.21% compared to the average daily spending recorded in December 2025, which was NIS 1.604 billion.

The peak figure for average daily spending was recorded in July 2025 and stood at 1.673 billion shekels.

January's data reveal a shift in consumer preferences: Leisure and entertainment saw a dramatic jump of about 25%, and hotels and guest rooms saw an increase of about 18%. Food chains also enjoyed an increase of about 10%.

On the other hand, there was a decrease in the field of tourism abroad: travel agencies recorded a decrease of 3.27% and the aviation sector decreased by 2.45%.

Online shopping continues to grow: In January, there was a 7.61% increase in online spending compared to last year, and spending reached 29.893 billion shekels.

The daily average of online shopping was 964 million shekels, compared to 643 million shekels in the daily average for physical transactions.

However, cash withdrawals from ATMs continue to decline: in January, there was a decrease of 2.11% compared to last year, with total withdrawals standing at 5.214 billion shekels.
