During a debate held tonight (Thursday) in the Knesset, which opened with the opposition's demand to condemn the blocking of Judge Aharon Barak's vehicle by Mordechai David and right-wing activists, Minister of the Negev and Galilee Yitzhak Vassaroff delivered an unusual and charged speech in which he held up a mirror to the hypocrisy and double standards of the left-wing protest.
During his speech, the minister revealed that his late father was attacked by a protester while in the emergency room with a heart attack.
""I was with my father in the emergency room. One of the protesters came to Shaarei Tzedek Hospital and shouted at my father, 'Shame on you for having such a son' while my father was connected to the machines. I asked my father to calm down and he couldn't and shouted at him. And this person continued to verbally attack him," he said.
He attacked the opposition - and revealed a series of severe incidents of personal and family persecution, which did not receive public or political condemnation: "You are all being led from a position. I took my father to the hospital when he suffered a heart attack, before he died, and protesters blocked the road. I begged them to 'clear the way.' They recognized me and attacked the car instead of allowing me to pass. Where were you then? You despised us," accused Wasserlauf.
He added: "Protesters ambushed my wife and children when I was not home and poured a bucket of water on them. A neighbor shouted at her: 'We won't let you enter the shelter.' Where were you? I am a public figure and I will absorb it. Should a three-year-old child hear people shouting at him, 'Your father is a terrorist?'"
""It's not possible that when it comes to people from the wrong camp, they are silent, and when it comes to a figure from the right clique, everyone is shocked. Don't tell me that what's happening is nothing compared to what's happened in recent years. They blocked cars, the Ayalon Highway, and when I went to the Attorney General and told her that there was selective enforcement - they laughed at me. The opposition mocked us.".
Wasserlauf made it clear that he condemns all violence, obstruction, and harm to public order from any side, but demanded truth and equality: "Either they condemn everything, or they admit that there is a double standard here. No citizens are more equal than others.".
""You want condemnation? No problem. But let's go back three years. Including the attack on my family. Are you able to condemn someone who is not from your clique? On the contrary, let's stop all this poison.".
