A soldier serving as a prisoner guide in the Military Police was arrested on suspicion of faking the kidnapping of a Palestinian and demanding a ransom from his family.
According to a report today (Sunday) by Doron Kadosh on IDF Radio, the Palestinian who tried to infiltrate Israeli territory was arrested by security forces and brought to a military detention facility in the Gush Etzion area. During his stay at the facility, the soldier filmed the detainee and sent the footage to his family, claiming that he kidnapped him, while adding to the video a demand for payment for his release.
The Palestinian family contacted the police - and initially it was believed that this was a Jewish terrorist incident involving the kidnapping of a Palestinian. The entire security apparatus, including the Shin Bet and the Jewish Brigade, was alerted. Only later, after the Palestinian's cell phone was located, did it become clear that he was in an IDF detention facility - and had not been kidnapped.
The soldier was arrested and taken for questioning. Because he was a member of the military police, the investigation was transferred to the IDF's internal investigations unit.
An IDF spokesman said: "Following the incident, an investigation has been opened. Naturally, we will not elaborate on the details of the investigation while it is ongoing.".
