
The Academy of the Hebrew Language announced this morning (Thursday) the word of the year for 2016, as chosen by the general public on the occasion of Hebrew Day.
The word that garnered the most votes and ranked first is "home.".
This year, the Academy once again turned to the public with a request to suggest and select the words that most accurately represent the moods, events, and feelings that accompanied Israeli society in the past year.
Thousands of users responded to the call and voted on the academy's website.
According to the results, the word "home" won a clear majority of 25% of the votes cast. In second place, by a considerable margin, came the phrase "artificial intelligence," which won 15.2% of the votes. Immediately following it, in third place, is the word "hope" with 14.6%.
The list of words nominated for selection this year was loaded and presented a complex picture of the Israeli reality. The other competing words, which each received 5% to 8% of the votes, were: mobilization, investigation, trauma (injury), normalization, with a kennel, return, and rehabilitation.
Last year - 2015, the word "hatupim" was chosen, and in the years before that, "bol'en" (2013), "tralol" (2012) and "matush" (2011).
