The suspect in the extinguishment of the menorah at the Weizmann Mall in Tel Aviv, a 17-year-old girl from Umm al-Fahm in Wadi Ara, was questioned by the police today (Monday) and confessed to the act. But she had an unusual excuse, which turned out to be false.

During her interrogation and after confessing to the serious act that caused a stir on social media, the girl told her investigators: "It was my birthday, so I turned it off.".

According to a report on Channel 12, a brief check conducted by investigators revealed that her birthday was in February, and not as she stated.

A police source told Channel 12: "This is an incident that caused great public outrage, and at this stage we are continuing to move forward with the investigation in order to bring an indictment against the girl for insulting religion.".

In the video released on Thursday, the girl was seen accompanied by a family member, who applauded her after the act.

According to the law book, in Article 170 of the Penal Code, there is a prohibition on "destruction, damage, or desecration of a place of worship or any object held sacred to a group of people, with the intention of denigrating their religion, or with the knowledge that they may see this act as an insult to their religion.".

The maximum penalty for this offense is three years in prison.
