After the historic meeting between Israeli and Lebanese representatives on Lebanese soil: The Prime Minister's Office issued a statement this evening (Wednesday) summarizing the meeting - in a positive tone.
The statement said: "Under the guidance of Prime Minister Netanyahu, and as part of the ongoing security dialogue between the US, Israel and Lebanon, the Deputy Head of the Foreign Policy Division at the National Security Council held a meeting this morning in Naqoura-Lebanon with the US Presidential Advisor for Lebanon, Morgan Ortagus, and with relevant Lebanese civilian representatives.".
The statement further stated: "The meeting was held in a good spirit, and it was agreed that ideas would be formulated to promote possible economic cooperation between Israel and Lebanon. Israel made it clear that disarming Hezbollah is mandatory regardless of any connection to promoting cooperation on the economic issue. The parties agreed to hold further dialogue.".
Earlier today, it was reported that the Prime Minister instructed Deputy Head of the National Security Council, Gil Reich, to send a representative on his behalf, Dr. Uri Reznik, to a meeting with government-economic officials in Lebanon.
This is the first attempt to create a basis for economic cooperation between Israel and Lebanon.
At the same time, Lebanon appointed former ambassador Attorney Simon Karem to head the Lebanese delegation to meetings of the ceasefire supervision committee.
This is the first time that a Lebanese civilian representative has been attached to the committee.
A Western source in Beirut, close to the talks, told Kan News that this is a "good sign.".
According to him, the inclusion of the civilian element in the oversight committee shows "that they want to move forward, not go back." In the same breath, the element admitted that the step was not taken with great enthusiasm, but under pressure from the United States and in an attempt to prevent escalation with Israel and resolve the problems.
