The National Planning and Building Council, headed by the Director General of the Ministry of the Interior, Dr. Shuki Amarani, approved today (Tuesday) to advance a plan to establish a new city for the Arab population in the Western Galilee east of the city of Acre.

This is a plan prepared at the initiative of the Ministry of Construction and Housing together with the Israel Land Authority in the Givat Tantor area, south of Jedidah-Makhar, which includes planned housing provision for approximately 40,000 people.

This is the first time that planning institutions have approved a plan for a new Arab city since the state was established. The National Council's approval today comes after the government made a decision on the matter six years ago.
This is Decision No. 3810, which was received in July 2008 and determined that an inter-ministerial team would formulate a work plan to examine the establishment of a new city for the minority population in the north of the country, based on alternatives that would be presented to it.

Now, after the National Council approved the advancement of planning within the framework of TAMA 44 - a national outline plan at the level of a local outline plan for new urban development in the north of the country for the Arab population, the plan will be submitted for comments by the district committees.

The Interior Ministry announced today that the new urban complex is intended to provide advanced and diverse housing and service solutions for approximately 40,000 people, which will provide a solution to strengthening the Arab middle class, on land mostly owned by the state: "The proposed planning will offer a variety of residential densities, allowing for community and private development, in dense construction with modern urban characteristics, and the creation of an urban center as a center for services, recreation, and commerce for the surrounding rural area.".
