Media personality Avri Gilad arrived on a lecture tour at Chabad houses for Israelis in the US and Canada.
During the lecture tour, when he arrived at the Chabad House in Fair Lyon, New Jersey, he put on tefillin for the first time since his bar mitzvah. Rabbi Yudi Eisenbach, emissary and director of the Chabad House for Israelis in the city, told COL what led to this moment.
""Avri arrived at our Chabad house in New Jersey just hours after the birth of our daughter… Before the event, I suggested he put on tefillin and he explained to me that he is very connected to Judaism, but 'doesn't connect to religious ceremonies' - and hasn't put on tefillin since his bar mitzvah.
""So I explained to him what is written in the book 'HaTanya' that a true connection with God comes precisely through a mitzvah - because the mind and emotions are human tools and are limited, but when we do a mitzvah that God gave us - the connection is infinite. This touched him and he agreed to put on tefillin in public before the event.".
""Thanks to this assumption of his - all the men present joined him and joyfully put on tefillin. It was a very moving evening that lasted into the night.".
