Since the establishment of Islamic rule in 1979, there has not been a visit by an Iranian representative to the Knesset - but last Friday it happened.

During the trapping activity at the Ariel Pavilion at the Nili and David Jerusalem Bird Research Station of the Society for the Protection of Nature, located in Kiryat Ha'alom, a young, rare and impressive songbird named Irenaea was captured, which nests mainly in the mountains of Turkey, the Caucasus and Iran - and in Israel is observed mainly during the fall and spring migration.

On Sunday morning, she was recaptured and released into the wild.

Yotam Bashan, director of the Jerusalem Bird Research Station, said that this was a unique and exciting capture, which adds another layer to the fascinating story of migration that passes through Jerusalem.

""In Israel, there is a small and rare population that breeds on the summit of Mount Hermon, and usually, in the spring, only a few, and sometimes not even one, Irenes are observed. I am happy that we were blessed with all this beauty, because there is no birder who does not desire a quality observation of it. This is another good reason to get up early in the morning and be part of the magic that happens at our station.".

The Society for the Protection of Nature adds that the irenia that was captured and ringed is too young to determine its sex, and at this stage, it is difficult to decide whether it is male or female. "The irenia is an exceptionally beautiful bird, with a beautiful orange breast, a black-and-white throat, and a blue back. It is a relative of the red-breasted robin, is considered a relatively large bird, nests in small bushes and thorny bushes of Mount Hermon, usually at an altitude of two thousand meters or higher, and is characterized by wonderful singing.

""The male is an especially colorful bird with shades of red-orange, black, and white, but the individual we captured is gray, and if it is captured again in the coming months, we will be able to identify Zweig," adds Bashan.

The Jerusalem Bird Research Station named after Nili and David of the Society for the Protection of Nature, which is celebrating 31 years of activity this year, is the first urban nature site of its kind in the country, and is a center of attraction for hundreds of thousands of colorful birds and thousands of hikers and groups throughout the year.

The research station, adjacent to the Knesset, preserves one of the unique natural sites in Jerusalem, and offers visitors, individuals and groups, an opportunity to view one of the most fascinating and special natural phenomena from a close distance, both for children, young people and adults, for nature enthusiasts and professional birders alike.

The station offers coordinated activities for tourist groups, students, and families - from bird stamping at the Ariel Weissman Pavilion, to an observation tour of the hideout and the station grounds, to a visit to the Gail Rubin Art Gallery.
