How much does the UN hate Israel? The American website 'Washington Free Bacon' revealed today (Wednesday) that the UN changed the criteria for declaring famine during the war in Gaza, with the aim of mobilizing international public opinion against Israel - and creating pressure to stop the fighting.
The move coincided with the publication of an official statement stating that "a famine is currently occurring in the Gaza Strip," an area controlled by Hamas.
According to the report published on the website, the threshold of severe malnutrition required to declare famine was reduced from 30% to 15%.
Unlike previous cases such as Somalia and South Sudan, where the UN relied on the IPC (Hunger Index) of 30% acute malnutrition by weight and height, the report on Gaza used the MUAC index, which is considered less accurate, and recorded a rate of 16.5% in Gaza City alone - which slightly exceeds the new threshold.
The report also states that more than 20,000 children have been hospitalized for treatment of acute malnutrition since April, and that at least 16 hunger-related deaths have been recorded since July 17, but these figures are based on internal sources that are not available to the public, including the Hamas Ministry of Health.
Richard Goldberg, a former White House staffer, said this was deliberate manipulation: "There is no famine in Gaza - the data thresholds do not support this claim - and yet the UN is changing the rules to suit the desired political outcome.".
