A fire broke out this morning (Monday) in an apartment on Netivot Hashimoto Street in the Haredi city of Modiin Illit.
Firefighters from the Binyamin area who were called to the scene achieved control without any casualties, but heavy damage was caused to the apartment.
A fire investigator who arrived at the scene determined that a candle left unattended in the house was the cause of the fire.
Lieutenant Commander Roni Yaakov, commander of the Matityahu station: "Upon receiving the report, firefighting teams went to the scene. Upon arriving at the scene of the incident, firefighters detected smoke coming from one of the apartments in the building. The firefighters attempted to make contact with the source of the fire and simultaneously conducted scans to locate trapped people, and carried out operations to release heat and smoke.
""With the completion of the firefighting operations, I began investigating the incident. The combustion pattern unequivocally indicated a source located in the common space of the house, and at the source was a soul candle.
""After investigating the residents, it emerged that the soul candle was indeed lit, and it was what caused the fire to break out.""
Deputy Chief of Police Roni Yaakov added: "We are in the 'between times' and it is of great importance to adhere to the rules of caution and safety:
