The attack took place on Saturday evening in Montreal. In footage filmed by a bystander and posted on social media, the attacker is seen kneeling and hitting the Haredi man, who is lying on the floor, several times. As the Jew tries to get up on his knees while his daughter holds him, the attacker is seen gathering items from a shopping bag, throwing the kippah into a fountain, and then fleeing the scene.
The mayor of the Hampstead borough of Montreal, Jeremy Levy, who is Jewish, posted the video on the X network, calling it "extremely obscene" and "an expression of outrage against basic human decency.".
He said, "In the heart of Montreal, a Jewish father is brutally beaten in front of his children - we will defend our people without apologizing.".
