A 16-year-old American boy who decided to run away from home did so in a way that almost led to his death: Airport workers in Maui, Hawaii, could not believe their eyes when they discovered a boy hiding in the wheel well of a Hawaiian Airlines plane that had just landed. This is reported by the British Guardian.
Immediately after landing, the boy tried to escape, but he was arrested and taken in for questioning. He told investigators that he had run away because of an argument with his parents, and that he had spent the five-hour flight from California to Hawaii in the small wheelhouse, in temperatures of more than 60 degrees below zero.
Officials in the country said it was a "miracle" that the boy survived. This is likely because he lost consciousness quite early in the flight, due to the cold.
Footage from security cameras at the San Jose airport, from where the flight took off, showed the boy jumping over the fence and entering the plane.
""He had no special equipment, and most of the time he was just unconscious," said an FBI agent.
What's even stranger is that the boy was found safe and sound, with no injuries. "He doesn't remember the flight, it's amazing he's alive," the agent said.
Law enforcement authorities decided not to file charges against the boy. However, he was transferred to the supervision of the Child Protection Authority.
