51% of those who sit in front of a computer for most of their workday report that they suffer from back problems, compared to only 1.2% of those who work in strenuous jobs. This is according to a survey conducted by Apostherapy, a company that has developed a method for treating back and limb pain using special, customized shoes.
About a quarter of those who suffer from back problems are eventually forced to stop working, or change the way they do it in order to continue working.
Those suffering from back problems lost an average of 13 days of work in the past year. 30% of them claim to have suffered a financial loss due to treatments and related products. Men lose more days of work due to back problems, and women report higher expenses for treatments. Most sufferers of back problems report that it is a chronic problem that lasts an average of 12 years.
About half of those suffering from back pain reported that their main difficulty is sitting for long periods of time, making this both the cause and the most severe consequence of the injury. 32% have difficulty getting out of bed and 25% noted that they suffer from difficulty going up and down stairs, from sleep disturbances, and when trying to cook. 12% said that the problem also affects their partners. 12% noted that they "think twice" before setting out on a task that requires driving.
