A 22-year-old policewoman was injured today (Thursday) and critically wounded in the head by gunfire at Pisgat Ze'ev in Jerusalem.
The police received a report of a person's life being in danger after he had not left his home for several days. The suspect in the shooting, in his 60s, had a license to carry the weapon - and when the police arrived at the apartment on 4th Street, they opened fire on them.
The policewoman was evacuated to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital with gunshot wounds.
According to the report, the policewoman entered the man's apartment accompanied by firefighters and MDA - and in response, he opened fire on them, hitting the policewoman. The firefighters who were with her were very slightly injured by shrapnel. The bullets passed the firefighters and hit the policewoman, who was standing behind them, in the head.
The police were able to take control and arrest the suspect.
The police said that today at around 3:00 PM, a report was received about a case of fear for human life in the Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood. Police from the Shepat police station, along with emergency and rescue forces, quickly arrived at the scene and knocked on the suspect's door, but there was no answer.
The police, together with the firefighters, broke down the door of the suspect's house, who at this point pointed a gun - held under a license - at them and fired at the forces. As a result, a policewoman who attempted to make contact was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
Immediately after the act, while striving for contact, the police overpowered the suspect, seized the gun and arrested him, thus quickly neutralizing the further risk of his actions. He was transferred for questioning at the Sheft station.
Numerous police forces arrived at the scene, under the command of Jerusalem District Commander Superintendent Amir Arzani, closed off the scene, and forensic officers began collecting evidence at the scene.
Meanwhile, the district commander conducted an assessment of the situation at the scene together with the district command staff and ordered the investigation to be assigned to the Shefat station in the Jerusalem district.
The police said in response: "Large police forces from the Jerusalem District are at the scene and have opened an investigation into the incident. The incident is being defined as criminal.".

MDA paramedic Shimon Oli said: "We arrived at an incident of concern for human life in a residential home in the Givat Ze'ev neighborhood in Jerusalem. During the incident, a break-in was carried out into the apartment and we heard gunshots. Within seconds we realized that a woman had been shot and, despite the danger, we quickly ran to the scene where the injured woman was lying unconscious. We quickly removed her from the scene of danger and locked ourselves in a nearby apartment and began providing life-saving medical treatment, while sending additional forces to the scene for fear that more people would be injured.
""We continued to provide life-saving medical treatment until the security forces on site entered and informed us that the scene was safe and we could leave the apartment. We quickly transferred her to an MDA intensive care vehicle that had been dispatched in advance and quickly evacuated her to the hospital in critical condition.".
United Hatzalah medic Yaakov Morgenbusser, who was outside the house in Pisgat Ze'ev at the time of the shooting, said: "We negotiated with him for a few minutes, and he refused to open the door. They tried to arrive with a ladder. One of the police officers decided that they were breaking into the apartment. Fire and rescue forces broke down the door. I arrive to go up to the apartment to treat a person I don't know what's wrong with him and I hear shooting. The policewoman, 30 meters from me, fell to the floor with a bullet in her head. We thought that was the end of the incident, so we went down with the policewoman, and then we heard another burst of gunfire and we didn't know what happened. Many forces arrived and took control of the shooter.".
