The Prison Service learned of the intention of two Hamas terrorists, imprisoned in the Ganot Prison, to attack guards with improvised weapons.
This morning (Wednesday), guards raided the prisoners' lockers and during a search, a toothbrush that had been sharpened and turned into a spike was found inside a shampoo bottle.
An investigation was launched against the prisoners.
Rabbi Kobi Yaakovi of Gondar praised the prison commander, Major General Dennis Begon, and the guards for their offensive action, and noted that the Prison Service, as a security organization, is prepared and alert, especially during this period, for scenarios of attempts to harm staff on nationalistic grounds.
During a recent visit by the Commissioner of Prisons to a prison in the north, the issue of converting toothbrushes into spikes, with the aim of harming the guards, was raised, and he instructed that alternatives be examined.
The Technology and Logistics Division, headed by Gonder Hatem Azzam, began examining alternatives, while characterizing a soft, small toothbrush adapted for use by prisoners.
A large number of toothbrushes were tested and at the end of the process, a "maximum safety toothbrush" was selected, which was the size of a finger and made of soft, flexible material.
Gundar Hatem A'zam, head of the IPS Atal: "Given the danger inherent in the toothbrushes that have been supplied to date, which could be used after sharpening as a weapon, it was decided to purchase the adapted brushes, for the sake of the safety of the staff. The brushes from the previous model will be donated to other institutions where they are needed.".
