Opposition to the conscription law among coalition MKs is greater than it seems - and its approval could lead to the overthrow of the government. This was reported this morning (Thursday) on the B network, according to sources in the coalition.

The opposition to the law comes from MKs from the non-Haredi coalition factions - Likud, Otzma Yehudit and Religious Zionism - most of whom have yet to speak out publicly on the issue. One of the MKs opposing the law told Kan News that the conscription law is what could break up the current government - not the reasonableness or the reform.

MK Tali Gottlieb of the Likud said: "I will not vote for the draft law in its current form. This is not the time for the draft law, a scout tent is no less than a Torah tent. I remind my Haredi friends of Rabbi Akiva, who joined the Mitzvah War. We are in an existential Mitzvah War. It makes no sense that you would grant an exemption to a person who has studied in a yeshiva for three years.".

Another MK said that, unlike the legal reform, public protest against the conscription law is also expected to come from the public that supports the government because "the right is not in favor of evasion.".

Other ministers expressed opposition to a blanket exemption from military service for ultra-Orthodox Jews.

According to a report on Galtz this morning, 6 Likud members say in closed conversations that they will not vote in favor of the exemption text demanded by Ministers Meir Porush and Yitzhak Goldknopf.

Defense Minister Yoav Galant demanded that recruitment targets be set and that the Service Dignity Law be enacted, which would provide benefits to those serving for more than 24 months and increase financial compensation for fighters. According to the same coalition sources, opposition to the recruitment law is expected to increase even if the Service Dignity Law is approved.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already promised the Haredim that the draft law memo will be published immediately after the holidays. As a result, Torah Judaism made it clear this week to the government secretary that if the draft law does not pass, the government will fall apart.

According to 'Kan News', the dispute in the coalition comes against the backdrop of statements by a senior official involved in talks on the conscription law, that the Treasury does not have the money needed for the outline in question.

The nightly meeting on the draft ended with a large gap remaining between Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Defense Minister Yoav Galant on the percentage of money that will go from state profits following the lowering of the exemption age in favor of the Service Honors Law.

The defense establishment is demanding billions of shekels for the plan. Smotrich told Gallant in closed discussions that the amounts he is demanding for his office are "imaginary.".
