The police opened an investigation today (Saturday) on suspicion of insulting a public servant, defamation, and incitement to violence, after protesters prepared signs with pictures and names of police officers who, according to left-wing protesters, were documented using violence against protesters - and distributed them at several protest sites in Tel Aviv.

""The Israel Police calls on the public to refrain from publishing publications that harm police officers and their families and slander them," it said.

The student protest movement stated: "The police's decision not to investigate violent police officers, but to investigate those who point out that they are violent, is absurd. The signs sought to bring to the public's attention the acts of violence from the past week. Our hearts go out to the victims of police violence who ended the demonstrations in hospitals. We will not be deterred.".

Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir: "The shaming and incitement campaign by a group of anarchists against the Tel Aviv Metropolitan Police, the heroes who protect the security of Tel Aviv residents and Israeli citizens and have been working dedicatedly every week for six months to enforce the law and maintain public order, is shocking and crosses every red line.".

""I support the heroic Israel Police officers and these police officers who give their lives in the field and also stand under attacks online, and I am confident that they will continue to do their job to the best of their ability, as they have done so far.".

Commissioner Kobi Shabtai responded: "They held a field trial for the police officers, every case will be investigated, they are not taking it lightly. This is a serious shaming phenomenon that we have not encountered before. These police officers have families and children, they have contributed to security for decades.".
