'The 'Uri Auerbach Prize for Jewish Culture' is intended to express appreciation to artists who express in their works the world of Jewish culture, its traditions and values in a variety of creative fields, and to encourage continued creativity in these fields.
Each year, six creative fields are selected. This year, the fields chosen were: music, visual arts, theater, cinema, literature and poetry, and the life enterprise.
The award is named after the late Uri Auerbach, a creator, artist and pioneer in the field of Jewish culture.
Minister Struck, whose ministry is responsible for awarding the prize, informed the creators of their win and thanked them for their unique contribution to the world of Jewish culture. The minister, who was among the initiators of the prize about seven years ago, noted that she feels a great privilege to award the prize this year, and intends to soon develop additional tools that will encourage creators and works in the field of Jewish culture.
Minister Struck announced to journalist and publicist Jackie Levy and musician and conductor Menashe Lev Ran that they had won the "Uri Auerbach Prize for Jewish Culture" for 2018 in the field of lifetime achievement.
In her conversation with Yehuda Grubeis, Minister Struck said: "Although the selection of the winners is a professional choice of the award committee, without any contact from me, not even a hint. But at the same time, I am really happy to inform you of the win, and to thank you for your groundbreaking cultural work in the field of cinema and its adaptation to the Haredi sector.".
""There is no doubt that you have created, with dedication and professionalism, a new type of culture in the field of cinema, one that comes from the world of values of Haredi society, reflects it and relates to it, and this without compromises or professional assumptions. For all of this, I am happy to express my gratitude. But beyond that, I also want to thank you for years of guidance and guidance to other creators at the beginning of their careers, who can continue to create in the special way you paved for them.".
From the award committee's reasons: "Since the 1990s, Yehuda Grubeis has been directing, producing, filming and sometimes acting. Before him, the field did not exist, so his work is truly groundbreaking and has since been a source of inspiration for other creators, and thus essentially opened the film industry in the Haredi sector. For many years, he invested his money and energy to instill a Jewish way visually, namely the cinematic way. Thus, a unique genre was created that cultivates Jewish heritage and identity.
""Despite the conservatism in the Haredi sector, Yehuda Grubeis' content has entered every home. This is a widely distributed work, with over a hundred films tailored to the Haredi public. Throughout his years of creation, Yehuda Grubeis was happy to guide, advise, teach, share and help other creators who were just entering the field and in general encouraged new works.".
""The production of the films and creation of content is carried out while making available values drawn from Jewish sources, history and tradition, all without assumptions or compromises regarding quality and professionalism in writing and production.".
""The Minister of Jewish Culture's Uri Auerbach Award is awarded to Yehuda Grubeis - but in addition, it is an expression of the importance of promoting Jewish-ethical-educational cinematic creation for youth in the Haredi sector. A creation of Jewish culture, and the time has come for it to gain significance in Israeli cinema."'
