Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu will participate this Tuesday - the day before President Joe Biden's visit to Israel - in the inauguration ceremony of a new neighborhood of 300 housing units in the town of Beit El, Israel Hayom reported.
During the Barack Obama era, when Netanyahu served as Prime Minister and Biden came to Israel as Vice President of the United States, a diplomatic incident arose following an announcement made during the visit regarding the promotion of construction plans in Jerusalem.
The situation is different now, since Netanyahu is not the prime minister, but it can be guessed that the White House doesn't really like the move.
According to protocol, a visiting American president is supposed to meet with the opposition leader, and it is not yet known whether this step will have an impact on the planned meeting between the two leaders.
In May, the government condemned the decision of the Supreme Planning Council in Judea and Samaria to advance construction plans for approximately 4,000 housing units to various stages.
The Bennett-Lapid-Abbas government then explained to the Americans that the decision was necessary to preserve the stability of the faltering coalition, and accordingly, it was unofficially agreed that Washington would publish a condemnation of the move but would not cancel the president's planned visit because of it.
