3 yeshiva students killed in light plane crash in Ukraine's Carpathians

Three yeshiva students - the late Amram Fromowitz of Monsey, the late Eliezer Brillel of Williamsburg, and the late Hershey Weiss of London - were killed today (Wednesday) when the light aircraft they were flying in crashed into a private villa near the village of Shprivtsi in the Kolomyia district of the Carpathian Mountains in western Ukraine. The pilot was also killed in the plane crash.

The air crash occurred at around 1:40 p.m. local time. Ten fire crews were called to the scene, and the deadly fire resulting from the crash was reportedly extinguished by 1:58 p.m.

The yeshiva students and the pilot were killed on the spot.

The village of Sprevaci is located near the borders with Romania, Moldova, Slovakia, and Hungary.

The three yeshiva students, Vizhnitz and Satmar Hasidim, who studied at the Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem, went on a "between-times" trip to Ukraine last Tuesday. They were part of a group of students from the Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem who went to visit the graves of the righteous.

The families of two of the young men who were killed live in Monsey and the Williamsburg neighborhood, and the family of the third young man lives in London.

The international unit of the ZAKA organization stated: "A report was received of a light plane crash inside a house in the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine, resulting in 4 fatalities, 3 of whom were Jews - without Israeli citizenship. The international unit team is handling it.".

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine announced in a statement: "On July 28, at approximately 1:40 p.m., a light sport utility vehicle crashed into a private house near the village of Shprivitsy, Kolomyia region, with subsequent fire, killing four people.".

It is currently unknown what caused the plane to crash or whether it was already burning in the air before crashing into the villa.
