Kiril Alabugin, 10, arrived at Assuta Hospital in Ashdod last night (Wednesday), complaining of pain in his leg.

Upon arrival, he was referred to the pediatric emergency room, where he was met by Dr. Ido Valenitz. Investigation of the case revealed that a week ago, Kirel was playing in his room, jumped on his bed and felt a sharp pain in his right knee, with a broken pencil lying nearby.

His parents sought treatment in the community, where he was sent, among other things, to have an X-ray taken, which the parents said was interpreted as normal, and Kirill was sent back home with instructions for local treatment of the wound only.

Dr. Ido Valnitz decided to send him for another X-ray instead, during which it was found that a foreign object, a pencil, 7 cm long, had penetrated his leg in the area of the right knee.

Kirel was hospitalized for further treatment, which included surgery, in the pediatric orthopedic department led by Dr. Ron Lamdan, director of the department, and Dr. Ronen Saber, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon.

The surgery was successful, the pencil was removed, and Kirill is expected to be discharged home today.

Dr. Ron Lamdan: "This is a patient who suffered for a week from a foreign object that penetrated his right leg and was not detected in a community examination prior to his arrival at the hospital. Upon his arrival, we identified the problem and Kirill was admitted for surgery, which was successful. This is an opportunity to ask parents, precisely at this time when the children are not in settings, to pay extra attention to their children and their actions. In addition, when the child complains and does not let up, to go to the hospital.".
