The UN establishes a commission of inquiry into the operation in Gaza • Tzipi Livni: Look for me!

'מועצת האומות המאוחדות לזכויות אדם', הגוף האנטי-ישראלי ביותר מתוך כלל מוסדות האו"ם, העביר היום (רביעי) החלטה על הקמת ועדת חקירה שתחקור את "פשעי המלחמה" שישראל ביצעה, לטענת הפלסטינים וארגוני זכויות האדם, במהלך מבצע 'צוק איתן' ברצועת עזה. הפלסטינים והארגונים שקראו להקמת הוועדה ציינו בפנייתם כי על פי נתונים של משרד האו"ם לעניינים הומניטריים בעזה, כ- 75% מההרוגים מהתקיפות הישראליות הם אזרחים, בהם ילדים ונשים, וכי 100,000 תושבים נאלצו לעזוב את בתיהם בעקבות התקיפה הישראלית. עוד טענו, כי שישראל הרסה בהפגזות 472 בניינים ויעדים אזרחיים נוספים כגון בתי חולים, בתי ספר, מסגדים וצוותי רפואה. ההתקפה הקטלנית ביותר נגד אזרחים בוצעה בשכונת שג'אעייה, בה נהרגו יותר מ-60 פלסטינים, בהם 17 ילדים ו-14 נשים. הוועדה הוקמה ברוב של 29 מדינות שהצביעו בעד, 17 מדינות נמנעו וארצות הברית התנגדה. שרת המשפטים ציפי ליבני כתבה בפוסט שפרסמה מיד עם היוודע דבר ההחלטה: "יש לי שתי מילים לומר על ההחלטה של מועצת זכויות האדם של האו"ם -חפשו אותי! אנחנו נמשיך לקבל החלטות למען בטחון אזרחי ישראל לפי המצפן המוסרי שלנו, צה"ל ילחם בטרור וימשיך לעשות המירב להימנע מפגיעה בחפים מפשע, ואתם תמשיכו לעודד את הטרור - כי זה בדיוק מה שההחלטה שלכם עושה". The Prime Minister's Office responded to the decision:

""The decision made today at the UN Human Rights Council is a farce, and every decent person everywhere should reject it.".

Instead of investigating Hamas, which is committing a double war crime by firing rockets at Israeli civilians while hiding behind Palestinian civilians, the Human Rights Council calls for an investigation into Israel, which is making unprecedented efforts to prevent harm to Palestinian civilians, by distributing leaflets, making phone calls, and sending text messages.

The Human Rights Council should begin investigating Hamas' decision to turn hospitals into operational bases and schools into weapons depots, and to place missile batteries near playgrounds, private homes, and mosques.

By failing to condemn Hamas's systematic use of human shields and blaming Israel for deaths caused by Hamas' grotesque policy of using human shields, the Council sends a clear message to Hamas and terrorist organizations everywhere that using civilians as human shields is an effective strategy.

Like the investigation that led to the infamous Goldstone Report, a report whose author ultimately retracted what he wrote, an investigation by a custodial court will end in a predictable manner.

The expected result is the defamation of Israel, and Hamas's wider use of human shields. Those who will pay the price will not only be Israelis, but also Palestinians, as Hamas redoubles its efforts to exploit them as human shields in the future.
